Gloomy Sunday in Mintal

Mintal. I’ve stayed in this damn place for too long now. Four years ago I was stumped at how, pardon me for the word, primitive the place is. The roads leading to UP Mindanao were barely passable. There were no motorellas, only habal-habals, (single motorcycles) that can charge you for as much as P20 per ride. UP Mindanao just shattered my dreams then and there of a comfortable and exciting university life.

A lot has changed by the way. The roads have improved, but it still needs a lot of work. Habal habal is still the preferred mode of transportation, and yes they still charge expensive rates. The Convenience Store Chain has landed in Mintal, and as rumors go, so will Jollibee in the next uhm… 20 years? :)

Adeona

The biggest fear for laptop owners (including me) is losing it to a thief. Laptops, though they’re slowly turning into necessities like mobile phones, are still expensive. My own Neo laptop is cheap compared to laptop models like Dell, Acer, Asus, and Apple but still, I spent more than P30, 000 for this unit and I don’t want to even think of losing it.

Adeona, an open source software, offers a solution to this very problem. Windows and Mac users can install this software on their units and it works by tracking the geo-location of your IP address. Adeona works by:

using state-of-the-art cryptographic mechanisms to ensure that the owner is the only party that can use the system to reveal the locations visited by a device.

using a community-based remote storage facility, ensuring retrievability of recent location updates

With the mac users, Adeona can even capture pictures of the thieves using the mac’s isight feature. As for the rest of us let’s hope Adeona soon offers the same feature for Windows and Linux users.

I have no idea how often laptops are stolen here in the Philippines, but I’m fairly sure it’s happening here, so better be safe than sorry, right? And hey, it’s free so don’t worry.

Read and download Adeona Open Source here.

Lesson Learned

I love to tinker and experiment. At the moment I am tinkering with my cpanel, learning the ropes of webhosting, and my wordpress blogs. Just a few hours ago I was feeling happy because finally I saw a theme I liked and it was easy to use too. Unfortunately, a few hours later I let out a cry of agony. I accidentally deleted my wp-config.php file. It started with seeing a php code I could add in my wp-config.php. Eager to try it, I opened my ftp account, downloaded the file, added the line, then uploaded it again to my account. Unfortunately there was something wrong with the line, and I couldn’t open my blog anymore. To add more, I bypassed my usual back-up before editing rule.

Panicking already, I frantically opened another ftp account and downloaded a copy of the wp-config.php file. I had to edit it, replace the db name, db password, and other stuff with my mysql username and password and wallah. almost as good as new.

Whew. I am never never… well going to edit without making sure I have a backup of my files. I should say I’m not going to tinker with something I don’t understand fully yet, but I learn better that way. hehehe… I should know. Oh well. lesson learned I guess. Never never bypass the backup rule again.

UP LAE ‘08 passers

I’m posting this…well..because in the past I used to dream of entering UP’s law school. hehe. But reality crashed in and I found out I’m not brave and hardworking enough to enter their world. Anyway, here’s a list of the passers for this year. I was hoping I’d see a familiar name or two…but no. Nobody from UP Mindanao tried I guess.

UP Law Aptitude Examination (LAE) Results

Aseya Bistro Oriental

Davao’s food scene is very much alive, last year alone countless food joints and strips took root in various areas of the city. From grilled to Spanish to fusion—Davao City has it, and the food can rival that of the other restaurants in other cities but with a slight difference: prices here are more affordable. The Davao Bloggers of course, are more than happy to taste and share to the world the food scene that Davao City has to offer.

For this leg of the Davao Food trip, Blogie brought us to Aseya Bistro Oriental, a charming little restaurant that offers a mix of Thai, Malaysian, Chinese, and Japanese cuisine.

For starters we all had the Aseya Salad (P 90), a mix of lettuce, bean sprouts, carrots, and other greens with a dressing made of peanut sauce, hoisin, and lots of sesame seeds. The sauce was absolutely delicious, a bit sweet and tangy at the same time. These food trips have really changed my mind about vegetable salads.

Hayden Cristensen stars in SciFi movie Jumper

Another sci fi movie. wee! I’m not a big fan of science fiction (reminds me too much of Prof. Paluga’s discussions) but there are some movies who gets through, especially if the cast includes a hunk or two. lol.

Jumper is an adaptation from a novel by Stephen Gould about people called Jumpers. Because of a certain genetic mutation (other reviews called it a genetic anomaly), a particular lineage have developed the gift of transporting themselves through space and time.

Hayden Cristensen discovers his gift only to find out that this ability has existed for thousands of years and is at war with people who wants to eliminate this entire lineage.

I’m beginning to notice a recurrent theme in most sci-fi shows I watch–genetic mutation and the battle between keeping this gift or not. Xmen, Heroes, and now Jumper, all posits the same theme.

Can’t wait to see this movie. :)
